Like many around us, we have struggled lately to find the right words. We still don’t have them. We struggle to find the answers. We still don’t have them. But we know that when faced with inequality and horrendous acts of brutality, silence and complacency are simply not an option. In his 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote: “We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.” Now, more than half a century later, that silence must finally end.
Black Lives Matter. That should go without saying. Yet sadly events throughout our history and today make clear that it does need to be said and said often and loudly by all of us. We lend our voices to the repeated demands for justice, the equal protection of the law and change to end the systemic racism and oppression that our Black communities have experienced for too many generations. We are proud of the progressive and democratic ideals our firm was founded on, but we recognize we have so much more to do. We must do better. Our actions, not just our words of outrage and grief, must express the support and solidarity we have for our communities of color. We commit to fight against racism, both personally and as a firm, and both internally and externally in the work we do, and we are evaluating which further concrete actions Curtis Thaxter will take to most effectively accomplish these goals.
