John Paul Erler, Of Counsel

After more than 50 years of practice, Jack Erler has become Of Counsel to the Firm. He has transitioned his practice to Nancy Savage Marcus and Tyler Costello. He will, however, continue to, provide advice to them and the Firm based on his extensive experience.

During his active years, he represented businesses; quasi-public and non-profit entities; and associations with an emphasis on youth camps and programs. He worked to solve complex legal problems in child related matters, as well as legislative, regulatory, employment, corporate, commercial, taxation, environmental and land use matters. Using his litigation experience, he also provided alternative dispute resolution services to individuals, businesses, insurers, governmental and non-profit entities; helping them find fair and legally sound resolutions to disputes.

Jack is a member of the American Bar and Maine Bar Associations. He is a member of American Camp Association, American Camp Association – New England, Maine Summer Camps, and Maine Youth Camp Association. He served on the Board of Governors of the Maine Alternative Dispute Resolution Professionals, now Maine Association of Mediators. He was a member of the New England Section of the Association for Conflict Resolution. He chaired the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and the Natural Resources & Environmental Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association. He served on the Board and as the President of the Board of Directors of the Sacopee Valley Health Center.

Jack’s greatest love in his practice has been his work with Maine youth camps, assisting them to enrich the lives of millions of children from Maine, across the United States and around the world. He will continue to consult with Maine Youth Camp and Maine Summer Camp associations. As the result of his work with youth camping, Jack is the recipient of the American Camp Association (ACA) Hedley S. Dimock, ACA Special Recognition, ACA New England Community Honor Recognition and the Maine Halsey Gulick Awards. In recognition of his career long efforts helping youth camping, Maine Summer Camps established the “Jack Erler Award” to be given to persons for outstanding contributions to organized youth camping.
